PROJECT CARGO CASE STUDY: HEAVY LIFT TRANSPORTATION OF POWER PLANT EQUIPMENT

Aug 17
2 min read

Transporting power generation equipment requires detailed engineering, precise coordination, and strict cargo securing procedures. Every stage of the operation - from inland transportation and heavy lifting to vessel loading and cargo securing - must be carefully planned to ensure the equipment reaches its destination safely.

Eurise K supported a heavy lift project involving the shipment of power plant equipment from the Port of Flushing, the Netherlands, for ocean transportation aboard m/v PALMERTON.

The project included several oversized and heavyweight components, including:

  • Generator Unit - 292 MT

  • Generator Unit - 150 MT

  • Rotor Unit - 51.4 MT

  • Additional smaller equipment and accessory cases

These cargoes required specialized handling due to their dimensions, weight, and technical lifting requirements.

From Inland Transportation to Vessel Loading

Prior to vessel loading, the generator units were transported from the warehouse to the terminal using Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs).

Once positioned alongside the vessel, each unit was lifted onboard using the vessel's heavy lift cranes together with dedicated lifting equipment, ensuring controlled and safe handling throughout the operation.

The loading sequence was carefully coordinated between the transport team, stevedores, vessel crew, and attending surveyors to maintain operational safety and efficiency during every lifting stage.

Cargo Positioning & Securing

After loading, each unit was positioned inside the vessel according to the approved cargo plan before the securing work commenced.

The securing arrangements included:

  • Steel stopper plates

  • Chain lashings

  • Wire lashings

  • Timber supports

  • Additional securing for smaller cargo using nylon belts and blocking arrangements

Each heavy unit was secured based on engineering calculations to ensure adequate resistance against longitudinal, transverse, and tipping forces during the sea voyage. The report includes calculation results confirming that the fitted securing capacity exceeded the required values for the generator units and rotor unit.

Survey & Quality Control

Throughout the loading operation, the cargo condition, lifting procedures, cargo positioning, and securing arrangements were monitored by attending surveyors.

Following completion of loading, the report concluded that:

  • The loading operation was completed without reportable anomalies.

  • No visible damage was observed to the cargo during the survey attendance.
